A transition you can weigh in tons

Industrialization is unusually measurable: coal tons, spindle counts, railway miles, urban growth. That does not make causal stories easy.

Capability unlocked

Dense portable energy plus machines meant societies could decouple output growth from yearly photosynthetic limits—at least for a long while.

That is historically grounded. Whether Britain’s lead was contingency, institutions, geology, empire, or all of the above remains disputed.
