Civilization Transition Model
A working model of how civilizations move from one capability regime to another—and where the model likely oversimplifies.
Problem
Civilizational change is usually narrated as timelines of inventions or great people, which obscures recurring structure: regime shifts in what societies can do and what then becomes scarce.
Transitions occur when enabling conditions allow a new core capability to scale, producing social reorganization, major consequences, and relocated bottlenecks that set up the next transition.

Problem
Without a shared model, every shiny technology gets labeled a "revolution." That cheapens the word and blinds us to what actually changed: the operable capability of a society.
Model
Working model (not settled science): a civilization transition has a recognizable anatomy—
- Previous regime hits constraints
- Enabling conditions accumulate
- A new capability becomes scalable
- Social forms reorganize around it
- Consequences create fresh bottlenecks
This is a template for investigation. Cases that lack steps 4–5 may be inventions without transitions.
Limitations
The model can overfit. It may underweight empire, accident, and ideology. It should be revised when cases refuse the template—not defended by stretching definitions. Treat every application as interpretation layered on historical evidence.
Assumptions
- Capability regimes are a useful unit of analysis above individual technologies.
- Bottlenecks relocate rather than permanently disappearing.
- Multiple societies can traverse analogous transitions on different clocks.
Evidence
- Recurring pattern across agriculture→writing→print→industry→networks of unlock then coordination stress.
- General-purpose technologies often show adoption lags before full reorganization.
Predictions
- If AI is a true transition, expect bottleneck migration toward verification, energy, and legitimacy.
- Societies that adopt tools without complementary institutions will show fragile gains.
Limitations
- Can retroactively impose a neat stack on messy contingent history.
- Weak on cultural meaning and internal political struggle.
- Order of transitions is stylized, not universal law.
Counterarguments
- History is too local for one transition grammar.
- Energy or institutions alone may explain more with fewer entities.
